When you have a new puppy at home, the most important thing will be potty training, also called house training. The goal is to develop good habits and make a good relationship between humans and pets.
Why to Potty Train a Puppy
Potty training or (Housetraining) will be the most important thing when you have a little puppy. Dogs are our best friends for a long time. Right now, everyone basically has a little dog in their home. And Potty Training will be the first thing they should teach their dogs. When your dogs know where and when to go potty, it will not only save your time but also make your house cleaner.
When to Begin Potty Training
Experts recommend that you begin house training your puppy when they are between 12 weeks and 16 weeks old. At that point, they have enough control of their bladder and bowel movements to learn to hold it.
If the dog has not been vaccinated, it may take more time, because the vaccine is necessary if you want to take it out.
A puppy’s bladder control depends on its size, breed, and age. Smaller breeds need to have increased breaks as their bodies process food and liquids much faster than larger breeds. Most puppies need potty breaks every couple of hours, regardless of their breed.
The following are some key points and supplies before training a puppy:
- Your patience and love
- Pee pads
- Pet leash
- Lovely and smart dog
- Pet fence or the right size box (To form a closed space for your dog)
- Pet snacks or toys (Chicken freeze-dried, balls, or something that your dog likes to eat and play with)
How to Potty Train a Puppy Outdoor
For everyone, patience is the most important prerequisite for cultivating a dog, but there are indeed a small number of people who can do this. For cats, mama cats stimulate them to go to the bathroom by licking them. And what we need to do is being the mama dogs as same as mama cats. Some people may ask whether they need to lick a puppy like a mama cat. Of course not! Next, I will use my practical experience to tell everyone how to potty training a dog like a mama dog.
I had a little puppy, and his name is Niki. I started using this method to teach him when he first came home. For everyone, It is very good for pets to develop a fixed habit. It’s like letting them know when to take them out to play and go potty every day. I will take them out 2 times per day. (8 a.m. and 6 p.m.) One is when I wake up, and the other is when I get off work. Whenever my alarm clock goes off, Niki will come to my bed and wait for me to get up.
What is incredible is that Niki will behave very well, because he knows that I will take her out to the potty. (Niki always be obedient before I meet his needs) When you see the dog sniffing the ground non-stop and spinning wildly, it means that the dog is ready to go potty.
Reward and Punishment are Very Important
What needs to be kept in mind is that give him some snacks immediately when he goes potty at the correct place (such as the backyard lawn, not in front of the neighbor’s house). It is easier than we think because puppies are very smart. Otherwise, you can punish it.
It takes me more time to take him out after getting off work. At this time, it’s easy for both of us. Because we all had dinner and I need to socialize, and a dog also needs to socialize. He can meet all kinds of dogs on the road (Exposing more of the same kind will make him less afraid of unfamiliar environments and no stress response), and I can relax after work all day. After my actual life experience, the following points can be summarized:
-Develop regular eating habits for your puppies. Typically, it is recommended to feed your puppy two meals a day.
– Keep your puppy on a leash with you. Develop the habit of not running around.
– Take the puppy to the same spot each time to do their business. Their scent will prompt them to go. (Repeat for a week, the puppies will always remember this place to do their business)
– Pay attention to the movements of the puppy. When doing certain movements, you can immediately distinguish them. If the puppy keeps sniffing the ground and spinning around, it means he is ready to do business.
– When your puppy eliminates outside, praise them or give them a treat. Kind of snacks will be the best treatment.
Remember that the time that goes out every day should be controlled at about 30 minutes, too long will make the puppy tired. Especially in the hot summer.
How to Potty Train a Puppy Indoor
What we need puppies to do at home is not to urinate and defecate anywhere, and let them know when to do their business. All people hope that their puppies can pee by themselves. You will not be disturbed when you are playing games, having dinner, or sleeping. When the dog learns not to pee at home, the owner’s freedom comes.
– As said above, Develop regular eating habits for your puppies. Typically, it is recommended to feed your puppy two meals a day.
– Put a pee pad in the pet fence or box that was prepared in advance.
– Guide your puppy in. Give your puppy five minutes, watching the whole time to see if the puppy pees or poops. Stand still in one spot, in an area where it’s OK for your puppy to potty. Quietly watch the puppy. By standing still, you keep the puppy in a small enough area that they will get bored with exploring fairly quickly and focus on pottying faster. By keeping quiet, you help your puppy stay focused on pottying, instead of interacting with you.
– After going their business, immediately release your puppies, give them freedom and also the snacks. They will know potty at this place will get awards.
3 Potty Times One Day
- Wake up in the morning
- After eating or drinking
- Immediately after waking up from a nap
If Puppies Potty In The Wrong Place
Punishing your puppy, whether that’s by yelling and scolding or pushing the puppy’s nose into the urine, will not help— these outdated tactics have been proven ineffective. It will often make your puppies misinterpret punishment to mean they shouldn’t potty in front of you. And then, they will hide from you before doing business. Remember to practice patience and kindness, no matter how old your dog is!
The most important point in punishing puppies is to let them know why they were punished. You should immediately take the puppy outside and then praise and offer a treat for going to the right place.
It should be very strong and will not hurt the puppy. Can help you control your puppy. Not only for yourself but also for other people. Not everyone likes dogs. There are still some people who are afraid or even hate dogs, not only because of fear but also because they have been hurt by dogs. Going out with the leash on will make the community more peaceful.
Dog Pee Pads
A good Pee Pad can not only absorb a lot of liquid, and has no bad smell, but it can also prevent it from being torn easily. When your pet uses the pads for the first time, you need to familiarize them with the smell of the pads. As a urine pad, the most important function is to be absorbent and not allow liquid to penetrate under the pad to soak the blanket. Remember to put the pads in the same place. When your pet grows up, the pads are also different. The corresponding changing pad can better absorb urine. Some puppies will bite the urine pad to play the role of teeth grinding, which is very normal for young puppies. What you should do is giving them some toys specifically for grinding teeth.
Give puppies private territory. When the puppy is brought home for the first time, keeping him in a cage is a very correct choice. But the cage is too small for the dog’s daily life. They can’t sleep, eat, do business, and play in the tiny cage. Fences can be the best choice, enough space and will not let dogs run around.
Pet Snacks and Toys
If you do not have all the time to play with your puppy, toys will replace you. Also, snacks are the best reward a dog can get when they do the right thing.
Patience and Love
Dogs’ intelligence is different from that of humans, and they cannot understand what you mean in the first place. So patience will be the best solution.
